According to the Georgia Department of Transportation District 3 office, Hwy. 54 repaving crews laid the asphalt topping on the inside eastbound lane from MacDuff Parkway to Peachtree Parkway in Peachtree City last night. Officials say the plan is to continue paving that inside eastbound lane of Hwy. 54 all the way back into and through Fayetteville over the next few nights (7 p.m. to 6 a.m.) until they reach the end of the project just past the McDonough Road intersection east of Fayetteville. At that point, they will turn around and pour the asphalt topping on the inside westbound lane back through Fayetteville until they reach the original starting point about a half-mile east of Piedmont Fayette Hospital.
Crews will continue to pave one lane at a time until the topping is completed, then they will work on turn lanes and other areas needing that top layer of asphalt. Once repaving is completed, loop systems will be reinstalled into intersections, and the traffic signals will be returned to the normal settings.
During all of this repaving, at least one through-lane will remain open, but expect traffic delays in the affected areas.
Officials also said the contractor does not plan to work around the clock this weekend, but they do plan to continue working the normal overnight hours of 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., weather permitting.
Please drive slowly and carefully past construction zones.
