Crews poured the asphalt topping on the inside eastbound lane of Hwy. 54 from Wilbanks Drive to a point between Robinson Road and Callaway Road on the east side of Fayetteville overnight Tuesday, and Georgia Department of Transportation District 3 officials say they plan to pick up from there tonight and continue eastbound to the project terminus, which is a point just east of the McDonough Road intersection.
GDOT repair crews were also working in the daytime Wednesday, blocking one lane of Hwy. 54 westbound near Rosewood Drive in Fayetteville, to repair a faulty stormwater drain discovered in the repaving process. The repair will be completed before repaving crews lay the asphalt topping on that portion of the highway.
GDOT says when repaving crews reach the eastern project terminus, they will turn around and pour asphalt topping on the inside westbound lane until they reach their starting point near Piedmont Fayette Hospital. From there, crews are expected to move to the outside westbound lane and pour the asphalt topping on that lane all the way to the Peachtree City/Coweta County border.
Crews will continue working each night 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Once the main lanes of Hwy. 54 are completed, crews will pour asphalt topping on turn lanes and other areas. They will then reinstall loop timing systems at traffic-lighted intersections.
During all of this repaving, at least one through-lane will remain open, but expect traffic delays in the affected areas.
Please drive slowly and carefully past construction zones.
